SES ASTRA TECHCOM AND HITEC LUXEMBOURG SUCCESSFULLY HAND OVER GALILEO PROJECT
Luxembourg Companies delivered transmit antenna system for the in-orbit testing of the GALILEO satellites in Redu/ Belgium
Redu (Belgium) / Luxembourg, 11th of May 2010. SES ASTRA TechCom, a subsidiary of SES ASTRA, and the engineering and technology provider HITEC Luxembourg announced today that they have successfully tested and handed over an antenna system for the European GALILEO satellite navigation program. The consortium provided a full motion antenna system with the related transmission equipment for the In-Orbit Testing (IOT) of GALILEO satellites. The antenna is situated at the Redu space station in Belgium which is owned by the ESA and operated by Redu Space Services, an SES ASTRA TechCom subsidiary.
The delivery of the antenna follows another contract for two large telemetry, tracking and control (TT&C) antenna systems, also for GALILEO. The first antenna has been mounted in Kiruna (Sweden) last year; the second antenna is currently being tested in Kourou (French Guiana).
The antenna system included different work packages for each member of the Luxembourg consortium, ranging from design, engineering, manufacturing, installation and commissioning to the management of the programme.
The project was awarded following a Request for Proposal and is an integral part of the GALILEO in orbit testing and validation infrastructure that is managed by an international industry cluster lead by DLR and INMARSAT. The successful hand over of the antenna system which is the first of a series that has passed site acceptance demonstrates the ability of the Luxembourgish consortium to deliver high quality and complex technologies to ESA.
The subscription of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg to the GALILEO program offers attractive opportunities to Luxembourg–based companies active in the space sector. The hand over of the antenna system in Redu is another acknowledgement by the European space industry of the know-how available by the Luxembourg space sector emerging since the adhesion of the Grand Duchy to European Space Agency (ESA) in 2005.

The EU funded project u-2010 can look back on many successful project results. u-2010 addresses public safety issues by researching new emergency and crisis management solutions. Investigations and applications of innovative and state-of-the-art communication technologies based on the current and new Internet technologies (i.e. Internet Protocol version 6 – IPv6) support this vision. The u-2010 project demonstration showed the solutions in a real emergency scenario, supported by the Luxembourg emergency services. The demonstration simulated an accident in the Grouft tunnel and showed how the new technologies developed in u-2010 will help first responders to resolve the problems that arise because of the remote location and the resulting unavailability of legacy communications infrastructure.
